Food for Thought

Here are the TOP TEN FOODS every college student should have on-hand:

1. Avocados: If you buy them unripened, they can last for weeks.

2. Oatmeal: Cold or hot, with milk or water, sweetened or mixed with fruit, oatmeal is great for breakfast or a healthy snack. Try the individual flavor packs.

3. Cup-of-noodles: Although it's not the healthiest option, it is a quick fix and can be a life, or hunger-pang, saver.

4. Bananas: These convenient fruits pack so much carbohydrates that just one can actually curb hunger for at least an hour!

5. Hot Pockets and microwave dinners: With the use of a toaster oven and microwave, these types of small delights can actually make a tasty and filling meal.

6. Pasta: Easy to make and delicious with a variety of sauces.

7. Frozen chicken breasts: Thaw these out, cook them with some pepper and salt, boil some pasta and voila! You've got a meal.

8. Toast: You can buy this in bulk and keep it fresh for weeks in the freezer.

9. Hummus: Both filling and great as a healthy snack. (Try Cosco's)

10. Peanut butter and jelly: A classic combination for those home-sick days. Filling and stays fresh for long periods of time.

***Bonus Super-Food: Nuts! Almonds, Cashews, Peanuts and Walnuts, to name a few, are nutritious and make amazing snacks when eaten with raisins.

AVOID:

Lettuce: Pre-cut lettuce can go bad in just a few days. Stick to lettuce heads and Romaine lettuce.

Large milk cartons: If you can, buy individual sized milk cartons as larger ones are often too big for one person and, unless you're an avid milk drinker, will spoil before you've had a chance to use them.
(Soy milk and almond milk stay fresh for weeks longer than regular milk.)

Eggs: If you didn't know, EGGS CAN GO BAD. The typical dozen egg cartons are usually too large for individuals. Try to get half a dozen.

Large amounts of junk food: This is just never a good idea. Try to mix healthy foods with the not-so-healthy ones in your diet. Keep it balanced.

Bon Appetite! :)

Graduating CSUN On Time: Tips and Advice

With the recession in full swing, budget cuts are making it extremely difficult for students in California's Cal State school system to get the classes they need to graduate on time.

Below is a list of proven techniques that will help you get a bachelors from CSUN in 4 years. These tips can also help those in other Cal State schools reach their graduation deadline goals.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tips for Graduating CSUN On Time:

1. Join a club or sport; you’ll get priority registration.

2. Take as many summer classes as possible. Take them at local JCs if your Cal State is full.

3. Save money by taking summer classes at local JCs.

4. Finish up your GEs ASAP by taking extra classes at your local JC.

5. Pick a major early and stick to it.

6. Talk to advisers and know exactly which classes you need to complete your major.

7. Avoid having to repeat classes by finding out which professors are easier to pass; an A is an A.

8. Make sure to go to professor office hours to kiss up for a better grade. Don’t make it obvious.

9. Don’t work full time.

10. Don't let 6 am classes deter you. If you need it, take it. You'll get through it.

11. Don’t focus on scheduling breaks into your schedule. Pack to-go lunches.

12. If a class is full upon registration and you need it, show up to the class early and every day until registration for the class is officially closed.

13. Complain to administration if a class is only taking a hand full of people when there is room for more. Do it with a group of students for more effectiveness.

14. Make lots of friends in your major. Ask people with earlier registration dates to save you a spot. Then agree on a day and time when they can drop the class so that you can add it. Hey, it works.

15. If adding the class you need doesn't work, make sure the professor is teaching the class the next semester and keep in touch with them. Most give priority to the people who keep trying. Again, it works.

Remember that priority is given by the number of units. Those with more units, usually seniors, have higher priority. Dedication is the real key to putting yourself on the fast track to graduating on time and starting your career. Follow these tips and you won't get stuck.

Student Deals on Black Friday?

So what's the deal with Apple and Black Friday? Will there even be any deals to look forward to from the notoriously 'stingy-with-their-discounts' company? Is it possible that you can get your student discount ON TOP of a Black Friday discount?
In the past, Apple has offered fair discounts on it's laptops and iPods during Black Friday and it has recently come to be known that Apple has given the go ahead to it's retail stores to, when asked, match the prices that their competitor's are offering on Apple computers. In other words, ASK FOR YOUR DISCOUNT!
Apple is trying to keep this news under wraps probably because competitors include Best Buy, which will be slashing Apple computer prices up to $150. As for getting a double discount...definitely DON'T count on it. Although computer prices have discount potential, the verdict's still out on Apple iPhones so keep your eyes and ears open.
With so many retailers slashing prices, Black Friday is a great time for students to get those necessities that will carry them through the rest of the school year. After a slow retail year, large retailers such as Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Ikea, and OfficeMax are trying to gain your business. Even without an additional student discount, Black Friday prices are sure to be at least 20% lower than average.
For example, OfficeMax has huge savings on printers, wireless mouses and many of the essential every-day supplies that contribute to a successful student. IKEA is known for having great deals on furniture and bedding as well as a free breakfast during Black Friday.
Some places are even offering student discounts on top of their Black Friday deals. JourneyEd.com, for example, is a website that's offering students, parents, and faculty up to 85% off popular software.
Black Friday can be hectic, frustrating, and full of lines so here are some tips to help make your Black Friday student shopping trip as good an experience as it can possibly be.

TIPS for Black Friday Shopping:
1. Note the Essentials: Think about what you are absolutely in need of and jot it down into a neat list.

2. Research Deals: Just like any good student, do your homework. Keep an eye out for Black Friday ads as they are released online. Make a note of the stores offering the best prices for the things you are looking for and call ahead to make sure the ads are accurate.

3. Plan Your Trip: Allow time for everything from bathroom breaks, potential traffic, and long lines. Know which retailers you are going to hit first, second, third, and last. Put them all down into a schedule and remember that it is flexible depending on the situation once you get there. Do not overextend your schedule.

4. Dress Comfortably: What could be worst than being in the midst of a show down with the dude whose got his hands on the last digital camera in stock and having your shoes start to pinch? Remember that THERE WILL BE LINES and these lines tend to wrap around the OUTSIDE of the store, so bring a warm jacket.

5. LEAVE kids at home: Trust me, you do NOT want to be dragging your or anybody else's kids through lines and crowded centers as they wine and beg to be picked up. Anyone under the age of 12 needs to stay home.
And unless you want to use it as a sympathy card for that instance when there is only one cashmere sweater left and its between you and the QVC grandma, leave the stroller at home, they're annoying for everyone else. Similarly, anyone over the age of 65 should probably stay home as well. THIS IS WAR people and it will be survival of the fittest!

6. Ladies, avoid hanging jewelry, especially around the ears, as your lobes may get ripped open in all the hubbub.

7. Carrying a purse through Black Friday can also be a bad idea. You better believe that pickpockets and thieves will be out in droves. For men and women, a fanny pack would actually be a more convenient idea on this shopping trip.

8. Lastly, carry pepper spray and maybe a stun gun...what? I said CARRY not USE...just for the effect and definitely if your going to Walmart.

HAVE FUN! :)
